Physical sunblock Vs Chemical Sunscreen

The warm weather is coming, have you chosen the right sun protection for you?

Sunscreens can be classified into two major types: chemical and physical.

Chemical sunscreens contain special ingredients that act as filters and reduce ultraviolet radiation penetration to the skin, they work by absorbing the sun's rays. Some chemical filters can scatter sun rays, but still mostly just absorb them.

Chemical sunscreens contain alot of chemicals;

  • Octylcrylene
  • Avobenzone
  • Octinoxate
  • Octisalate
  • Oxybenzone
  • Homosalate
  • Helioplex
  • 4-MBC
  • Mexoryl SX and XL
  • Tinosorb S and M
  • Uvinul T 150
  • Uvinul A Plus

Chemical filters tend to be more irritating to skin.

If it gets in your eyes, it can make your eyes sting and water.
Some can cause allergic reactions.

You have to apply chemical sunscreens a minimum of 20 minutes before sun exposure.

They are generally safe, however some chemical filters generate free radicals which can cause skin damage, irritation, and aging.

Physical Sunscreens, most often referred to as sunblocks, are products containing ingredients such a titanium dioxide and zinc oxide which physically block ultraviolet radiation (UVR). Physical sunscreens protect your skin from the sun by deflecting or blocking the sun's rays.

Sunblocks provide broad protection against both UVB (UV rays that burn skin) and UVA (UV rays that age the skin) light.

Titanium dioxide can be problematic for some people. (If you break out from mineral make up and physical sunscreen, titanium dioxide could be the culprit.)

Zinc oxide is generally safe. It can be used on delicate skin and is a main ingredient in diaper rash cream.

A physical sun block starts protecting immediately upon application.

They are safe, FDA approved and don't cause free radicals.

Physical sunscreens tend to be better tolerated by most skin types because the chemical filters used in chemical sunscreens can be irritating for many people.
